ARTIFACT: This is a World War II United States Navy M-422A flight jacket with a rare sewn-on United States Marine Corps name tag. John W Longpre became a 2nd Lt. in 1943. At the end of WWII he was a 1st Lt. serving with VMTB-131. He made Captain in 1951, so that dates the nametag to the Korean War era. He left the USMC as a Major in 1956. This was probably Longpre's jacket throughout his flying career. The M-422A debuted in 1941, succeeding the M-422 jacket, which had no designated place to store a pencil. The jacket is in leather with a red lining and is a size 36 or 38.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Size 36 or 38. Approximately 20" (armpit to armpit), 15-1/2" (across back shoulder to shoulder), 24-1/2" from shoulder seam to end of cuff and about 25" from base of collar to bottom of waistband.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Goatskin leather, mouton (lamb's wool) collar, twill, elasticized cotton/nylon, nickel, plated brass.

ATTACHMENT: Zipper, snap placket beneath, inside snap pocket, buttons on exterior pockets.

MARKINGS: BUAERO (Bureau of Aeronautics) U.S. NAVY SPECIFICATION M-422A FRIED OSTERMANN CO. CONTRACT NO. 1406-A; CROWN on zipper.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Navy collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. Thanks to Kurt Stauffer for information on John W Longpre. ebay STORE CON-LL-20-VGEJXR LABJJX3/12 RET2/15

CONDITION: 6+ (Fine-Very Fine): The jacket has some rips in the lining, wear to the cuffs, and overall wear besides.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
