ARTIFACT:
WWII circa 1943 – 1945 United States Army Air Forces 873rd Bomb Squadron, 498 Bomb Group, 73rd Bomb Wing, 20th Air Force jacket patch, photo, and photocopies of award letters presented to the 873rd and Sergeant Einar O. Sjoholm. The 873rd was activated in 1943 and after training finished in Kansas, 1945, the squadron was stationed at Isely Field in Saipan, becoming the first B-29 squadron in the Marinas. The patch depicts an elephant wearing aviation goggles, relaxing on a cloud and in the act of dropping a bomb – set against a red background, and showing ten white stars. The black and white, period photograph shows Sgt. Sjoholm and friend in front of the 873rd field sign. The paper reference material included is eight photo copied pages of award commendations for the squadron 1944 – 45 and also includes photo copied period photos of Sgt. Sjoholm, his Classification card, and a small image of a Christmas card sent home to his wife.

CONDITION:
7+ (Very Fine+): The patch shows moderate age wear and soiling, was removed from clothing. The photograph is in remarkable condition and the accompanying paperwork shows moderate wear and folding.
