ARTIFACT: World War II United States Naval Air Station Corpus Christi jacket patch. The center of the patch is a red, embroidered circle containing a five point star that shows the letters: "CC" in the center and surrounding: "U. S. N. A. S.". The outer edge of the center of the winged patch reads: "WE KEEP THEM FLYING". After the bombing at Pearl Harbor, the amount of trainees nearly tripled and the NAS provided intermediate training on a variety of aircraft. By 1944, more than 35,000 pilots had received their pilot wings from the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, then considered the largest training base in the US. One of the members of the third graduating class was former President George H. W. Bush, who became the youngest pilot to graduate.
