ARTIFACT: This is a WWII submarine launch button for the USS Scorpion (SS-278), a lost boat. She was launched July 20, 1942 from Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Naval Shipyard. Scorpion's fourth and final war patrol began January 3, 1944. After two days traveling toward Eastern China, a rendezvous with her sister ship Herring (SS-233) was stymied by bad weather. An injured man was to have been transferred to the Scorpion, but instead he remained on the Herring, a fateful situation. The Scorpion was never heard from again, and was declared lost on March 6, 1944. She earned three battle stars for her World War II service.
