ARTIFACT:
This is a circa World War II United States Army enlisted man wool shirt of 45th Infantry Division combat veteran Staff Sergeant 3d Class Walter B. Maskiewicz, Company I, 180th Infantry Regiment. Maskiewicz, a three-time Purple Heart recipient, was from Nashua, New Hampshire, and was wounded three times in action as documented by the three period news clippings showing his photograph. The shirt has a great, early war olive drab honorable discharge patch, a fully embroidered 45th Division patch and two staff sergeant rank stripes embroidered upon wool. The shirt comes with a nice assortment of World War II paper and cards, including Maskiewicz's 3rd Purple Heart order, an Oak Leaf Cluster for the Purple Heart order, a letter from the US Senate for New Hampshire signed by Senator Styles Burgess, his capture papers and more. There are also a handful of reunion attendance ribbons and related publications.
VINTAGE:
Circa World War II and reunion items from afterward.
SIZE:
Shirt (14-1/2 -34 on tag): approximately 20" (armpit to armpit), 24" from shoulder seam to end of cuff, 17" across back shoulder to shoulder and about 31-1/2" from base of collar to hem; paper items and ribbons/badges are of various sizes.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Shirt: wool, resin buttons; 45th Div patch: fully embroidered in silk/cotton threads; rank stripes: wool felt embroidered in silk/cotton threads; discharge patch: silk embroidered in silk/cotton threads; paper; newsprint; ribbons: gilt brass, silk, paper and celluloid.
ATTACHMENT:
Shirt: buttons up front, on breast pockets, under collar and at cuffs; reunion ribbons: horizontal safety-style pins.
MARKINGS:
Shirt: 14 ˝-34 on tag; 17 8607 written inside shirt; ribbons: various maker marks and patent numbers on reverse; cards have various numbers.

CONDITION:
8- (Overall Very Fine-Excellent): The shirt has one very small spot of discoloration near the collar and a tiny moth nip; some of the ribbons show light to medium wear; articles shows light aging.
