ARTIFACT: This is a commemorative postcard for a Prussian U-boat commander by Gustav Liersch & Company of Berlin. The card pictures Commander Weddigen of U-boat 29 who died in 1915, and a verse written for him. The reverse bears a stamp and postmark (possibly from August 1915) and a hand-written message in German. Captain Otto Weddigen was the last commander of U-29. U-29 was sunk with all hands on 18 March 1915 in the Pentland Firth after being rammed by HMS Dreadnought. She is the only submarine known to have been sunk by a battleship.
