ARTIFACT: This is a very rare and wonderful original circa 1910 stopwatch or chronograph (arbitrary time recording device) used by the USLHS to clock lens rotation. Timers such as this one were issued only to twenty-six lighthouse supervisors: this is one of only a few USLHS stopwatches extant. This piece is by the reputable Swiss Berna Watch Company, whose resume included supplier to the US Government as well as gold medal award winner at international turn-of the century exhibits. The back of the case bears the engraved letters U.S.L.H.S., and the interior case has a serial number. The timepiece has a porcelain dial marked "Berna" and a silver-plated case. The Light House Service merged with the US Coast Guard in 1939.

VINTAGE: Circa 1910.

SIZE: Approximately 1-7/8" in width and 2-3/4" in height and 5/8" in thickness.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Silver-plated case, porcelain dial.

ATTACHMENT: Suspension loop, hinged case.

MARKINGS: SWISS 7 SEVEN JEWELS BERNA WATCH CO. inside; BERNA WATCH CO. SWISS 905969 on inside cover.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Coast Guard collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VFJJX12 LAFGEX10/12 SADJJX3/14

CONDITION: 8- (Very Fine-Excellent): The watch case has some expected minor wear.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
