ARTIFACT:
Wonderful circa 1900 Polar Exploration Ship Fram patriotic Norwegian pin in enameled silver. In the late 1870's, Fram ("Forward") was the creative innovation of an explorer who wanted to travel to the North Pole, a feat no ship before had been able to accomplish. To do so, Fram would have to avoid breaking into pieces against the icebergs. To defeat this challenge, the builders created Fram to be wide and shallow, design elements that would allow for it to become frozen in an ice glacier. The result made history, Fram was able to travel farther North and South than any other ship before its time. During WWI it sat in a port decaying, but was rescued, restored, and is now preserved in the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway. The pin shows a lovely, intricate detailed image of the vessel that reads: "FRAM".
