ARTIFACT: This is a circa 1920s flight suit and goggles attributed to a Charles Lindbergh contemporary and friend, Philip Love. Love flew mail from St. Louis to Chicago in the 1920s and early 1930s for Robinson Airlines, as documented in an accompanying note written by Love and elaborated upon by a museum curator who acquired the suit and goggles from Love's family. Love was also mentioned in a Lindbergh biography. The suit is in the maternity style, with buttons up the side, and was made by Summit in waterproof material by the Cravenette Company. The goggles are by Resistal.

VINTAGE: Circa 1920s.

SIZE: Approximately 20" from armpit to armpit; 47" length from center of back collar to pant cuff; 18" from shoulder to shoulder along back; 23-1/2" from shoulder seam to end of cuff; inseam: 25-1/2". Goggles: 6-1/2" by 2-1/4" (lenses) with approximately 30" (total) strap.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Suit: "Cravenette" treated (waterproofed) material, resin buttons, metal snaps, brass buckle; goggles: glass, elasticized cotton band, mouton, plated brass; paper.

ATTACHMENT: Suit: metal snaps at arm and pant cuffs, buttons, tabs with buttons at arm and pant cuffs, belt with buckle and loops; goggles: strap with buckle, swivel hinge between lenses.

MARKINGS: Suit: SUMMIT AVIATION SUIT GUITERMAN BROS. ST. PAUL; 40; REG'D "CRAVENETTE" TRADEMARK RAIN PROOF; goggles: RESISTAL H.B.N.Y.

CONDITION: 6- (Fine): The suit has some overall wear, areas of minor staining, including behind collar, a loose button, a hole in the interior and an old repair on one pant cuff (see photos); the goggles show heavy wear and discoloration to the lenses Š one lens is separated from the mouton; strap is still intact but partially deteriorated in one areas.
