ARTIFACT: Wonderful 1896 Col. Sise, Steam Fire Engine No. 2 Portsmouth Fire Department parade ribbon. The pinback features an ornate frame with treated paper that reads: "MEMBER" from which a silk ribbon is suspended and reads: "WE'LL TRY" along the bottom of the white portion and in the red, white, and blue segment it reads: "10th ANNUAL PARADE OF THE PORTSMOUTH FIRE DEPARTMENT SEPTEMBER 3, 1896" and the base of the long ribbon features bullion tassel embellishments. A shorter, medal with a red, white and blue ribbon is suspended from the top of the longer ribbon and features a celluloid medallion that shows the steam engine in the center and surrounding it reads: "COL. SISE No. 2". The reverse retains the original paper stamp with reads: "RIBBON BADGES FROM GEO. A. SANFORD 23 HAWLEY ST. BOSTON" partially covering an original Whitehead & Hoag Co. Newark, N. J.

VINTAGE: Circa 1896

SIZE: Approximately: 9-1/2" in height x 1-1/2" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Silk ribbon, celluloid, tin, paper, bullion

ATTACHMENT: Horizontal safety style pin and horizontal pin with 'C' type catch for suspension ribbon.

MARKINGS: "BADGE BAR PAT'D OCT 18th, 1892, MARCH 7th, 1893, WAVING FLAG, JUNE 14th, 1892; MEDALLION PATENTED JUNE 12th, 1894??? 1896 RIMLESS MEDALLION 1896 MEDALLION MARCH 5th, 1895, JUNE 12th, 1894, DESIGNS NOV. 27th, 1894 DEC. 4th, 1894. DEC. 11th, 1894.", "RIBBON BADGES FROM GEO. A. SANFORD, 23 HAWLEY ST., BOSTON."

CONDITION: 6+ (Fine - Very Fine): The parade ribbon shows moderate to heavy age wear and discoloration, original paper label intact, much of the celluloid details remain, bullion shows handsome patina.
