ARTIFACT: Wonderful 1860's ??? 1870's Portsmouth, New Hampshire Chief Engineer badge in hand-engraved gilt silver. This was the "Working" badge that was worn by the men who served the City of Portsmouth as what we now would call the Fire Chief. Most of the gold plating has be polished off the front as the badge was worn by successive Chief Engineers for almost 50 years! The front of the badge reads: "CHIEF ENGINEER PORTSMOUTH FIRE DEPT." and the top shows nicely embellished details surrounding an engraved five point star. This was the ONLY Fire Chief Badge passed from one Chief (engineer) to the next until the title was phased out and the simplified title of Chief came into use in the early 20th century. It is a one-of-a-kind piece of Portsmouth Fire Department history.

VINTAGE: Circa 1860's - 1870's

SIZE: Approximately 2-1/2" in height x 1-3/4" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Gilt silver.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical "T" pin with 'C' style catch.

MARKINGS: None.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a Portsmouth, NH Fire Fighting and Rescue collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. CON-RLB-16 MDEJX3/15 LADGEX4/16 SLBBIEX6/17 SRETRLB04/07/21

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The badge shows moderate to heavy wear, some of the original gilt plating remains intact, overall beautiful patina.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
