ARTIFACT: This is a very rare United States Navy sailor's cap tally from the USS Maine, the sinking of which precipitated the Spanish-American War. The Maine exploded at Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, and popular opinion at the time blamed the Spanish for the Maine's demise although the evidence was far from conclusive. The tally was worn around the brim of the hat and reads USS MAINE.

VINTAGE: Circa Spanish-American War.

SIZE: About 1-1/2" wide and 34" long.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Silk ribbon with tinsel thread embroidery.

ATTACHMENT: N/A.

MARKINGS: N/A.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a United States Navy collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay VCJJLX00 LIIIX 3/10 SeIIIX1/15

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): Tally is in good shape but the writing is somewhat faded.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
