ARTIFACT: This is a first edition memorial book for the USS Thresher (SSN-593) that was once a part of Admiral Nimitz' personal library. The USS Thresher was a nuclear submarine built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1960 and sunk off Cape Cod on April 10, 1963 during deep-diving tests. The book was compiled and published by the staff and deputy commander of the submarine force U.S. Atlantic Fleet in April 1964, one year after the Thresher was lost. The inside cover of the book displays a typewritten letter to Adm. Nimitz from E. M. Eller, the then Director of Naval History, and has a total of 161 black and white pages (two pages only are in color).

VINTAGE: First edition: April 1964.

SIZE: 163 pages with end pages; approximately 10-1/2" in height and 8-1/8" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Matte paper, painted cloth-wrapped cardboard.

ATTACHMENT: Sewn and glued binding.

MARKINGS: Compiled by the Staff, Deputy Commander Submarine Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet April 1964.
