ARTIFACT:
This is a unique circa World War II United States Army Air Forces pilot wing presented to pilot by his B-24 Liberator! The wing is inscribed "To DOLPH From FUNNYFACE" B-24H Ser. # 42-52673. This magnificent wing is by Balfour and was presentation-engraved to Pilot Adolph F. "Dolph" Fellmeth, Jr. The wing was most likely from his crew, but worded to read as if the AIRCRAFT (FUNNYFACE) was presenting it to him. Funny Face was the plane he arrived on that day, although he only had two combat missions with her of the 30 he completed. A wonderful piece of WWII history! Attached please find images of the B-24 Pilot Crew or "Aircraft" presented Wing & his accompanying medals. Medals appear to be late replacements, carrying little monetary value. He may have worn them in a parade, or they may have been assembled for a memorial when he passed. Above is a great crew shot with Dolph in top right corner (photo not included in purchase). He flew the C-119 "Flying Boxcar" and served in the European Theater of Operations during WW II, in the US Army Air Corps as Pilot in the 833rd Squadron (the "Wyverns") of the 486th Bomb Group in the 8th Air Force, flying B-17s and B-24s. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with a subsequent Oak Leaf Cluster as well as the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the European, African, Mid East Operations Ribbon with two Gold Stars. Fellmeth, a USAF Major, died in 2003 in North Carolina: it's hard to believe he passed almost a decade ago. So few left.
