ARTIFACT: This is a unique circa 1835 27th Regiment, New York State Artillery, or N.Y.S.A. (National Guard) medal named to Captain Robert Eberhard Launitz. Launitz was a Russian-American sculptor who emigrated to the United States in 1828 from Livonia. Born Schmidt, (von der) Launitz was officially added to his name when as a young he impressed the Imperial Guard with his emergency horse-shoeing capability when the army stopped near the river Launitz. He became known in New York as a worker of marble, and he modeled several memorials, most notbly the Soldier's monument in Lexington, Kentucky. Launitz died in 1870. The medal reads: "Awarded for zeal and activity in the service (1835). The medal is in coin silver with a 14 karat gold (unmarked) center.

VINTAGE: Circa 1835.

SIZE: Approximately 1-5/16" in diameter.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Coin silver, 14 karat gold.

ATTACHMENT: Suspension ring.

MARKINGS: none.

CONDITION: 8- (Very Fine-Excellent): The medal has only some light wear and tarnish.
