ARTIFACT:
This is a great circa World War I United States Army dog tag marking kit. The top of the wooden case reads MARKING OUTFIT FOR STAMPING METAL. This kit would have been used to make dog tags for the Marine Corps dog tags as well. The kit contains a hammer and a block to strike the sheet metal against. There is also a selection of pegs that mark out numerals and the alphabet. This kit has an inspection mark inside the cover. It is marked inside with a fictitious Sergeant's name (William Feversham 1st Sgt. Co. C 74th INF. U.S.A.) as a guide for making the tags. The kit is missing three templates, also as a guide, in order to have the tags stamped in regulation style.
