ARTIFACT:
This is a Scarce Mid - 1950s USAF Large 85th FIS Fighter Interceptor Squadron Jacket Patch Warped. Removed From Flight Jacket Clothing. Light Warpage From Laundering.
Patch design was approved 7 August 1953. It is a VERY Mid-Century Modern type of design.
The unit flew F-51 Mustangs initially (1952 -1953), F-86D Sabre Interceptor next (1953-1957), and finally F-86L Sabre Interceptor (SAGE) until inactivated (1957-1959).
The unit was part of Air Defense Command and flew out of Scott Air Force Base, in Illinois, from 1 November 1952 - until inactivated on 1 July 1959.
VINTAGE:
Mid 1950's.
SIZE:
Approximately 5-1/8" in height x 4-3/8" in width.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Fully-embroidered patch in multi-colored silk/cotton threads.
ATTACHMENT:
To be sewn onto Flight Clothing.
