ARTIFACT:
This is a great old, scarce, ca 1941, Washington DC Auxiliary Police Badge, #3597. It has the original wearer's Initials scratched on back: F.D.S. Early, Thin, Blue Chrome on Brass.
The Metropolitan Police Department (Washington, DC) Auxiliary's were a short lived force from late 1941 to 1943.
Thousands stepped up to join the Auxiliary's with the outbreak of WW2. Numbering in the thousands, the Auxiliary's had a whole rank structure from Assistant Superintendent (The head of MPD was by a Major & Superintendent. A Chief didn't come around until about1953.) down to officer with Detectives as well.
These Auxiliary Officers assisted the MPD in many-many functions, however, in 1943, the Corporation Counsel for the District ruled that since the Auxiliary's could carry guns and make arrests and had a rank structure, only Congress could set the number of officers and their ranks with the MPD, thus every Auxiliary above the rank of Officer was illegal.
Additionally, the Auxiliary's would not be covered for any in-the-line of duty injuries and the officers would be responsible for their own medical coverage.
This pretty much killed the Auxiliary program.
The MPD Chief loved the idea of having a large number of volunteers, trained and available to assist the department and later, after WW2, the Reserve's were formed which are still in existence today.

Early, Thin, Blue Chrome on Brass.
