ARTIFACT:

This is a Scarce 5 Digit WWII 1944 USSR Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class Type 2 # 70623.

Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class Number 70623 was awarded on March 12, 1944 by Order of the Day of the Armored and Mechanized Forces of the Leningrad Front to Guards Senior Lieutenant Aron Khaimovich London, chief of the chemical service of the 31st Independent Guards Tank Regiment. During the fighting of January 15 near Pulkovo, coordinated the interaction with the attached sapper units. Following the preliminary artillery bombardment, he took a sapper platoon and on his own initiative approached an antitank ditch. When the sapper platoon commander was taken out, London assumed command. He saw to it that a path was cleared across the ditch. Early on London was wounded, but he dressed his own wounds and stayed on the battlefield until the passageway was completed. When most sapper had been taken out by enemy fire, London gathered some infantrymen who were close by and completed the work. He was decorated by the regimental commander for his bravery and heroism.

London had been wounded twice before, in July 1943 and January 1944. His other awards were a Medal for Courage (February 1943), Red Star (May 1945), Defense of Leningrad and Victory over Germany medals, and a Combat Merit Medal in 1950. He was born in 1921 in Vitebsk into a Jewish family, joined the army in November 1939 and joined the party in 1943. By the end of the war he served as deputy chief of staff for reconnaissance of the 31st Guards Tank Regiment. By 1947 he was a captain and studying at the army's Higher Armored and Mechanized Forces Officer School. He was still serving in 1950 and lived in Oranienbaum.
