ARTIFACT: This is a rare World War II trainee photograph of the Civilian Pilot Training Instruction from the United States Navy V-5 aviation cadet program. The program was an immediate immersion in flight, starting with mastery of a civilian aircraft. The need for pilots was escalating and training in something lighter than military aircraft increased the safety and competence of the new recruits. The matted photo is of Paul Ray Mattson, and was taken by Guther of Washington, Iowa. The photo can stand up if the tabs and slots are fitted together.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 8" in height by 5-1/2" in width (when folded).

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Photograph, cardboard.

ATTACHMENT: Folding cover with tabs/slots.

MARKINGS: PAUL RAY MATTSON (handwritten); GUTHER WASHINGTON IA; ROBB PAT. JUNE 17 (?) MADE IN USA stamped on reverse of cover.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a civil aviation collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. VBEX12 LHEX3/12 SLFJX9/16 SFJX08/20
