ARTIFACT:
This is a Rare & Iconic 1890's - 1900's San Antonio Texas City Police Badge. #256 is the highest known number for this type of badge, the so-called "Blanket Badge", because it is so large, it is the "size of a blanket".
This badge was probably first issued in 1891 when the Department underwent a makeover, and the number of Patrolman and Mounted Officers closed in on 40, although it is also possible that the badges were worn as early as the late 1880's: there is little known of early San Antonio Police Department history. But, as the number of Patrolman and Mounted Officers was only around 25 or so at this time, these would have been only the very lowest of numbers.
As new officers came on and the Department grew, new badges with higher numbers were ordered. Older badges were also re-issued, and it is hard to find a low numbered City Police Blanket Badge that has not be re-pinned, and/or replated.
The badge was worn at least into the 1910's, and possibly into the 1920's.
This iconic badge has a place in Collections based on: The Old West, Texas, Major City, and even "Stock" badges, as, although it is known where the badge was worn, the name of the city is not actually on the badge.
