ARTIFACT: Rare Civil War United States Army Signal Pistol. The model 1862 U.S. Army signal pistol is heavy brass with wood grips, it has a spur trigger and a lever and toothed jaw that holds the flare in place. All pistols were marked on the butt: "US ARMY SIGNAL PISTOL 1862 A. J. M." A. J. M. are the initials of Mayor Albert J. Meyer who at the time, was the Chief Signal Officer in Washington, DC, the pistols were inspected by 1st Lieut. Samuel Cushing. The flare gun would have held many different colored flares invented by J. Rogers, either solid red, green, or white single colors, or a combination that shot as many as three colors out of the same flare with each color holding a different call of action. The first flare usually shot off, was labeled with the letter ÔP' for prepare and it was multi-colored. This signaled the receiving party that a message was to follow. When being answered the first signal used would be marked with the letter ÔA' for answering. The messages were sent using flares that were numbered from 0 Ð 9 and using the a code prepared, approximately 16 Ð 64 messages could be sent. Often these artifacts are overlooked, but battles were lost and won often based on effective communication. Flare and signal pistols were at one time the only communication between a ship at sea and troops on land. Sometimes overlooked, this is an incredibly important and at one time, vital piece of military equipment and communications.
