ARTIFACT: This is an early (circa 1920s) fire badge from Arcadia, California, most likely the First Department Issue as In 1923 the Arcadia Fire Department was officially organized under the direction of Fire Chief Topping, who also acted as Chief of Police. A Seagrave 750 gpm pumper was purchased and one fireman, J.M. Nellis, was hired. The remaining fire fighting force consisted of approximately 30 volunteers. Prior to this, Arcadia's only fire fighting equipment was a reel of 2 ??" hose kept at the old City Hall, then located at First Avenue and Huntington Drive, and manned by any citizens who were available at the time of a fire. By 1938, J.M. Nellis had been reappointed as the fire chief and nineteen full time firefighters were hired, marking the end of the volunteer firefighting system.

The badge is numbered 9 at center and has a partial maker mark on reverse.

VINTAGE: Circa 1920s.

SIZE: Approximately 2-1/8" in height and 2-1/8" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Plated brass.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical safety-style pin with saddle.

MARKINGS: STP CO. on saddle (this is a partial marking of Los Angeles Rubber Stamp Company, later (by 1936 or so) known as Los Angeles Stamp & Stationery Company).

ITEM NOTES: This is from an early California fire and rescue collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay06/08/23 VAJJX13 LBDEX7/13
