ARTIFACT:
NOTE: All of these USN patches being listed on
consignment with consignor code CON-DSS come from the lifelong collection of a
retired Vietnam War USN Pilot who had close times with the Tailhook Association
and was able to obtain some very special and unique patches. We are proud to
have been given the opportunity to bring parts of this collection to market. We
will be listing 25 or so now, and hope to have another offering in April or
May.
What we have here is a Rare & Beautiful Korean War era US Navy Chenille Flight Jacket Patch for VF-172 from 1950. The 42 on the patch has not been explained, but it might have been a personalization / Aircraft Number of the pilot it was originally issued to, Lt. Donald Mason Minnigerode.
The Squadron Lineage shows it Initially established as VBF-82 on 20 August 1945, redesignated VF-18A on 15 November 1946 and finally redesignated VF-172 on 11 August 1948. On 19 October 1950 the Chief of Naval Operations CNO approved a new insignia and nickname for VF-172: Blue Bolts. The squadron was redesignated VA-172 on 1 November 1955 and disestablished on 15 January 1971. The nickname Blue Bolts came about when the squadron transitioned from prop aircraft to the McDonnell F2H Banshee.
