ARTIFACT: This is a Rare 1948 Amherst College Class Ring of Bradlee E. Gage.

Amherst College is a private liberal arts college in Amherst, Massachusetts. Founded in 1821 as an attempt to relocate Williams College by its then-president Zephaniah Swift Moore, Amherst is the third oldest institution of higher education in Massachusetts.

From Mr. Gage's obituary:

Amherst, MA — Bradlee Ewing Gage, Sr. passed away on September 1, 2021. Brad was born November 22, 1924 in Ware, MA to Leroy and Marjorie Ewing Gage. He lived in Enfield, MA until the age of 9, at which time the family relocated to South Amherst, a result of their town being flooded to make way for the Quabbin Reservoir. Brad always had a story to tell of his childhood, having a remarkable memory and the ability to share his experiences with a wide audience. Brad attended Amherst schools, leaving high school his senior year to proudly serve his country with the 120th Army Airways Communication Squadron, stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He gained the rank of First Lieutenant.

Upon discharge from the Army in 1944, Brad was able to begin his studies at Amherst College, graduating in 1948. Brad could recount many adventures with his college friends and time spent at the homestead on Shays Street, many stories involving the raising of chickens and his mothers passion for breeding Corgis.

Brad met his future wife, Elizabeth Allen, while on an excursion with college friends to Rockport, MA where Betsy's family had a summer home They were married June 17, 1950 in Winchester, MA. Just days after being married, Brad received his MBA from Harvard Business School. They began their married life in South Bend, IN, when Brad accepted a job with Studebaker.

With little to begin with, they were able to obtain a furnished apartment due to the fortunate eavesdropping of a fellow restaurant patron who overheard their discussion about the lack of a place to live and offered an apartment close by. They made the most of their time there with new friends and many tailgate parties. Brad and Betsy returned to Amherst, settling into their home on South East Street in 1951 and welcomed their first child, Nancy that same year. Twin sons, Brad Jr and Bill were born in 1955.

Brad and Betsy enjoyed a rich social life on the common, making lifelong friends and memories. Tales of the many gatherings of both the parents and then the children are legendary! Brad and Betsy enjoyed 63 years of marriage, with Betsy passing in November 2012. Brad was very proud of the fact that he was able to stay in the one and only home that he and Betsy owned until his death.

Being an avid fisherman, it was no surprise when he accepted a position in 1951 with the US Line Company of Westfield, MA, manufacturers of fishing line and equipment and was President of the 40UP Tackle Company until his retirement at age 93. He continued to keep contact with many former business associates until his passing.

During the 1970's, Brad was appointed by Governor Dukakis to be the Chairman of the five man board of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. Golf was another passion for Brad and he was pleased when he was able to play for free at Amherst Golf Club when he turned 90. There he also made many lifelong friends and was not adverse to a game of pitch at the club. Cribbage was also a passion for Brad and he was never sorry when accepting the winnings from his opponents, he was a fierce card player.

A skilled storyteller with a keen eye for attention to detail, in recent years Brad turned to typing capers and mysteries on his manual Royal typewriter that were enjoyed by family and friends.
