ARTIFACT:
Rare 1939 submarine model of the USS Squalus Salvage Unit from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The base of the model reads: "SQUALUS SALVAGE UNIT MAY 23, 1939 - SEPT. 15, 1939". The Squalus was launched from Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard on September 14th, 1938 and sunk off Rye, NH on May 23, 1939 during a test dive. A rescue effort on May 24-25 saved 33 crewmen. The ship was raised and towed to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in September 1939, decommissioned that November, and then re-commissioned as the USS Sailfish (SS-192).

Circa 1939.
SIZE:
Approximately 7-1/4" in length x 1-1/2" in height; Base: 1-7/8" in diameter.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Chrome plated brass, black painted details.
ATTACHMENT:
Screw-fastened base for setting on a desk or mantle.
