ARTIFACT:
This is an Order of the Crown of Romania, Commander's Cross, 2nd Model neck badge. The award was officially instituted on the day that Romania became a kingdom ruled by King Carol I: March 14, 1881. The Commander's Cross is the third level out of the five classes of this award. Initially bestowed only upon civilians, the award was given to members of the military starting in 1938, the year of this model. The award is a beautifully enameled cross bearing the initials of King Carol and encircled by the words PRIN NO INSINE 14 MARTIE 1881 (By ourselves March 14 1881). 10 MAIU (May 10) is on the reverse to commemorate several significant events on that date from Romanian history. The cross is encircled by a wreath of crown and swords. The suspension ring and crown that would have been at the top are missing.
