ARTIFACT: Nice, late 1920's Matson Steamship Lines SS Matsonia enameled lapel pin. The public shipping company was established in the late 1880's with initial routes to the Hawaiian Islands. The steamship was instrumental in the growth of Hawaii's tourism and economy. After WWII, Matson Navigation operated a luxurious airline with routes between the Pacific Coast and Hawaii and pilots flew the Douglas DC-4 aircraft. However, Pan American World Airways ultimately caused Matson to end its air operations as a result of political pressure that resulted in the inability to obtain federal operating authority. The pin is in the shape of a ship's wheel with a red flag through the center that reads: "S.S. MATSONIA".
