ARTIFACT:
Nice circa 1955 Norddeutscher Lloyd Steamship Line salad plate by Rosenthal China. Norddeutscher Lloyd was a German shipping line that was established in 1857 and became one of the most important shipping companies of the 19th and 20th century. In the late 1880's they provided postal service from the German Empire to Australia and Far East. In 1887 the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Große was built and at the time was the largest, fastest ship in the world! The company endured many setbacks, loss of revenue, and equipment was destroyed during each World War and post-war, the company nearly started from scratch, but came back each time and civilian service finally started back up in 1955. The plate features a light blue embellishment along the edge and Norddeutscher Lloyd's emblem, an entwined anchor, wreath, and key.
