ARTIFACT: This is a circa World War II Nazi edelweiss hat badge as worn by the sailors of U-524. U-542 went on her first war patrol in November 1942. She sank a British tanker on that patrol, and on her second war patrol in early 1943, an American ship. A few weeks later, all hands on board the U-boat were lost when the ship was bombed by a B-24. The badge shows the national flower of Germany with a swastika at its center.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: Approximately 1-9/16" in height and 1-1/2" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Gilt brass, painted details.

ATTACHMENT: Two bendable prongs.

MARKINGS: RZM M 7/3.

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The badge has some small spots of light wear and areas of tarnish.
