ARTIFACT:
This is a named Spanish American War United States Navy medal grouping. The rim of the period private purchase Spanish Campaign medal reads "Lieut. J.W. Wilmott, U.S.N. USS Hector". A captured Spanish gunboat named "Pedro", the ship was rechristened the USS Hector and patrolled out of Key West, Florida, Cuba, and throughout the Gulf and Mexico. Aside from the Spanish Campaign medal, the grouping includes a hat badge and six other medals: one for the Military Order of the Serpent (M.O.S.), a sub-group of the United Spanish War Veterans (U.S.W.V.), and other veteran's groups, including the A.U.S.V.W. (Auxiliaries United Spanish War Veterans). Officer James Wilmott was honorably discharged on January 4, 1899.

Circa Spanish-American War (1898) and after (veteran's medals).
SIZE:
Spanish Campaign medal: approximately 2-7/8" in height and 1-3/8" in width; smallest badge (Cuba veteran badge): 1-5/16" in diameter.
MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION:
Bronze, silk.

Spanish Campaign medal: horizontal pin on bar with Tiffany-style catch, suspension ring; hat badge: horizontal pin (missing catch); other medals have various attachments.
MARKINGS:
Spanish Campaign medal: "Lieut. J.W. Wilmott, U.S.N. USS Hector" (on rim); top of Veterans' Medal: B 12971 with other partially hidden markings; Cuba veteran badge: MADE IN U.S.A.; Order of Serpents veteran badge has a hard-to-read Chicago maker mark; A.U.S.W.V. medal: THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. NEWARK, N.J.

CONDITION:
7 (Very Fine): The medals overall are in Very Fine shape: the Spanish Campaign medal ribbon is very fragile, as is the ribbon on the Military Order of the Serpent medal; the hat badge has some spots of oxidation and is missing its catch. All other medals are in Very Fine-Excellent shape.
