ARTIFACT:
Early 1920's Ð 1930's Illinois Police Hat Badge. The badge is done in exquisite detail. The top of the badge is an eagle with wings spread, beneath the canopy of its wingspan is the White House and beneath that a United States shield with stars and stripes. The center of the shield shows a symbol for agriculture and on either side American indigenous people, a male in a feathered headdress and a female holding a cornucopia. The base of the badge reads: "POLICE". The Illinois state police was established in the 1920's, during that time there was less than 2,000 miles of paved roadway. Much of the crime was driven by gangs and the location of rural areas next to towns with banking institutions setting the stage for many robberies. The police were often associated with the Chicago and Northwestern Line. The reverse of the badge shows two screw posts with disc backings.
