ARTIFACT: Nice WWII United States Army 541st Parachute Infantry Regiment jacket patch, unused. The 541st was activated in 1943 in Fort Benning, Georgia and it consisted of highly skilled and educated troopers who had yet to complete Jump School. During the time the 541st was training, President Eisenhower began to dislike the idea of dropping large groups of airborne troopers because of friendly fire and other accidents that made the operations somewhat unsuccessful. Because of this, the 541st remained stateside and developed new techniques and tactics, displayed Airborne Tactics for VIP, and replaced men lost during combat in established airborne units. In July of 1945, the call for the 541st to head overseas finally came and the unit was transferred to the Pacific Theater, landing in Manilla. The 541st remained stationed there as they waited to become an attachment to the 11th Airborne and together, Jump the Japanese, however before this could happen the regiment was deactivated. The 541st Parachute Infantry dedicated three years of preparation and waiting before their date of deactivation, many never seeing combat action. The patch features the 541st emblem, a winged panther embroidered on a yellow, wool felt background.
