ARTIFACT: Scarce WWII United States Army Air Forces 381st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force Jacket Patch D-Day Unit, Triumphant We Fly patch. The 381st Bombardment Group (Heavy) was Constituted in October and Activated in November of 1942. The 381st Bomb Group flew the B-17 Flying Fortresses between June 1943 and April 1945 while stationed in England with the 8th Air Force. The 381st was awarded two Distinguished Unit Citations. One in 1943 for remaining engaged while under heavy attack to bomb shipyards at Bremen, and the second in 1944 was awarded to the entire 1st Bomb Division, for completing a bombing mission with the objective of destroying aircraft factories at Oschersleben, without fighter protection, they also supported the Normandy Invasion and knocked out communications and struck airfields near the battle zone during the Battle of the Bulge, and supported the Allied crossing of the Rhine. The patch reads: "TRIUMPHANT WE FLY" and shows a pair of missiles, one red and one blue.

VINTAGE: Circa World War II.

SIZE: About 3-7/8" in width by 4-3/4" in height.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Fully embroidered with cotton embroidery thread on wool felt.

ATTACHMENT: To be sewn onto garment.

MARKINGS: None.

CONDITION: 7+ (Very Fine+): The patch shows minor to moderate wear and soiling, was removed from clothing and shows a small area of repair near bottom, does not detract.
