ARTIFACT: Minty WWII Japanese Naval / Army Officer Sword Tassel from the Showa Period (1926 Š 1989). This unissued example is blue and brown and remains untied. After WWI and during WWII there was much conflict between China and Japan. Oil, available only in the Dutch East Indies helped to escalate problems that remained after the Second Sino-Japanese War. In 1941, after refusing to move Imperial troops out of China, President Roosevelt announced an oil embargo on Japan. This angered the Imperial Army and launched the Greater East Asia War, which began with the surprise attack on the naval base at Pearl Harbor. For the next six months, the Japanese had the initiative and went on the offensive. Hong Kong was overrun on December 8, 1941. The Imperial Army overran Hong Kong before the end of 1941 and before the end of the summer in 1942, had conquered Burma, Siam, the Dutch East Indies, and the Philippines. However, the Battle of Midway (June 1942) changed Japan's momentum and put them on defense. The Empire of Japan fell in August 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped on the 6th, the Soviet Union invaded on the 8th, and the second bomb was dropped on the 9th, and Japan finally surrendered on August 14th, 1945.
