ARTIFACT:
This is a wonderful prosthetic "peg" leg from the mid-nineteenth century or earlier. The peg leg is in painted, gilded wood with brass, copper and iron, as well as Buff leather. Typically associated with pirates from the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries, the peg leg was developed in the Dark Ages, and other prostheses composed of metal with a wood core have been dated as far back as 300 B.C. (credit to www.amputee-coalition.org). One wide strap and two narrower straps go around the upper half, where the amputated stump would fit into the wooden crotch, which is shaped almost like a tuning fork. The whole squared-off enclosure is in turn supported by a tapering wood end which is reinforced by metal bands. The brass cap at the bottom creates the signature click of a peg leg.
