ARTIFACT:
This is a Late Issue (WWII era) World War I, 27th Infantry Division US Army Distinguished Service Cross & Purple Heart of Private Russell E. Laford. Laford quite possibly requested this as a replacement for a lost or damaged pair during the patriotic times of WWII to show his past exemplary service. This is a US Government engraved and issued pair of medals.

The President of the United State of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Russell E. LaFord (ASN: 1215451), United State Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 108th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, A.E.F., east of Ronssoy France, 29 September 1918. During the operations against the Hindenburg line Private La Ford left shelter and went out into the open under heavy shell and machine-gun fire and succeeded in bandaging and carrying back to our lines a wounded officer.
