ARTIFACT: Large, 1970 Anti-War Protest March Pin from the Student Mobilization Committee (SMC). Formed in 1966, the Student Mobilization Committee's goal was demonstrate the opposition of students in both high school and college, to the United States' involvement in the Vietnam War. The SMC was originally named the The Vietnam Day Committee and worked to organize protests on campuses and in cities. Among the Vietnam Anti-War Protest groups, the SMC was one of the first to accept both soldiers and civilians and before the United States began withdrawing troops from Vietnam, the SMC had centers in fifteen cities. The SMC, like other Anti-War groups began to disband after troops started returning home and the conflict deescalated. The black celluloid pin reads: "VIETNAM CAMBODIA KENT AUGUSTA." in white lettering and below: "MARCH. MAY 30 SMC" in red. The edge of the pin shows a maker's mark that reads: "N. G. SLATER CORP., N. Y. C. 11" followed by a local Union stamp.
