ARTIFACT: This is a hand-signed, autographed real photo postcard (RPPC) of noted World War I pilot Lt. Pat O'Brien, US Volunteer with the Royal Flying Corps. An Illinois native, Patrick "Pat" Alva O'Brien worked on the Santa Fe Railway prior to enlisting. He signed on with the Aviation Section of the US Air Service in direct response to railway raids allegedly by Pancho Villa. It is said that after a lengthy hiatus at a San Diego aviation camp, O'Brien decided to join the war effort through the Royal Canadian Air Force. He shipped out to fly with the 66 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps and after just a few weeks in France, O'Brien was captured by Germans. He later described his captivity and escape in his 1918 book, "Outwitting the Hun", and was consequently awarded the Military Cross. After the war he did some adventure-hunting, married an actress, and apparently ended up shooting himself at a posh Los Angeles hotel on December 17, 1920 after things did not work out. The postcard shows a World War I image and signature as O'Brien was dead by 1920.
