ARTIFACT:

Great circa 1910's - 1920's Omaha, Nebraska Metropolitan Police Detective Badge. The nicely detailed badge is topped with a standing, spread-wing eagle and the shield below reads: "OMAHA METROPOLITAN POLICE DETECTIVE" and features the number "56" in the lower center with black painted detail. From what I can find out, which is little, I believe this badge might be as early as the 1910's. The Metropolitan Police were founded in 1887. They had a Chief of Detectives by 1892.

There was a 1909 History of the department that was online in the past, and it was obvious that at that time the Detectives were all plainclothes, and this is a smaller, "wallet" size badge, that would be carried by them, and shown when needed, but not necessarily worn. I know by the 1930's or later there was a larger Detective badge, possibly for 'full dress' or parade occasions. I also believe this smaller badge was probably in use from the 1900's or so, through at least the 1930's, hence the full replacement of the pin and catch during the period of use. Evidence of a slightly shorter pin sits below the hinge, and there is light grinding around the catch, but the patina nearly matches that of the badge. There were 15 detectives in 1909, so that puts this badge in the teens or twenties based on the numbering.
