ARTIFACT:
Great, 1950's Matson Lines souvenir cigarette lighter from the Steamship Matsonia. The public shipping company was established in the late 1880's with initial routes to the Hawaiian Islands. The steamship was instrumental in the growth of Hawaii's tourism and economy. After WWII, Matson Navigation also operated a luxurious airline with routes between the Pacific Coast and Hawaii and pilots flew the Douglas DC-4 aircraft. However, Pan American World Airways ultimately caused Matson to end its air operations as a result of political pressure that resulted in the inability to obtain federal operating authority. The lighter features a raised, red enameled flag that shows the letter: "M" in the center of a white circle surrounded by six stars. Below the flag it reads: "MATSON LINES S S MATSONIA" in black engraved and painted detail.
