ARTIFACT:
Great 1937 Nursing School graduation pin from New York State Hospital Central Islip in 10K gold. Central Islip State Hospital, originally opened in 1889 under the name New Colony with about 80 patients, it grew to become the second largest psychiatric hospitals in the United States with nearly 10,000 patients in 1955. During the Great Depression, trains would deliver patients in cars with steel bars on the windows. Day to day activities for patients included making mattresses, furniture, sewing clothes, and growing food. The hospital underwent a few name changes before it was closed under the name Central Islip Psychiatric Hospital in 1996, many of the buildings have since been destroyed or repurposed. The center of the pin shows the Great Seal of the State of New York in recessed embossed detail and an outer ring of blue enamel shows the letters: "N Y S H". The reverse is engraved: "STEPHANIE H. KULIS CENTRAL ISLIP 1937" and a maker's mark below reads: "FOLGER, N. Y. 10K"
