ARTIFACT:
This is a Gorgeous Textbook Early World War I French Pilot Fix Wing Eagle Badge in Gold Fill circa 1914-1915.
The finest non-solid Gold example we have seen. Exquisite Detail & Patina to this nearly 3-Dimensional Badge.
Worn unofficially by French Pilots prior to the creation of the "Issue Brevet" in late 1916.
1. Design: The insignia displays the form of an eagle with outstretched wings, a powerful symbol often associated with the potency and prowess of aviators. The detailed features of feathers, beak and talons signify vigilance, strength, and speed.
2. Material: The material is Gold-Filled, which was typically used to symbolize distinction and honor.
3. Context: During World War I, pilots were a relatively new and elite branch of the military. The designation of these specialized wings would have been a significant recognition of skill and bravery.
4. French Origin: French military insignia of World War I often included elements of national pride and would have been worn with great honor, potentially on the uniform of military aviation personnel.
These wings were both a mark of status within the military and a symbol of the bravery and skill required to take to the skies during a new era of aerial combat. Owning such an insignia today is not just about owning a historical artifact but also about preserving a piece of the human spirit, perseverance, and innovation from a pivotal point in history.
