ARTIFACT:

What we have here is a beautiful gold-filled New York City Marshal Presentation Badge from 1936. The badge style is based on the Potsy Badge, which was worn by NYPD officers in the 1890s, but never with the full eagle top used on the City Marshal badges. These badges always have a deep relief strike, and applied numbers, 118 in this case, but what makes this badge unusual is that it has a flat back, instead of a shell back, and a large inscription is on that back plate reading:

PRESENTED TO:
HON. EDWARD F. BUHLER
BY HIS FRIENDS
JULY 30, 1936

17 Days earlier, Edward F. Buhler was appointed NY City Marshal by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.  Prior to his service as Marshal, Buhler had been an Alderman in the Jamaica / Queens area of NYC, spent meany years with local civic and welfare organizations, and was the President of the Queens-Bellaire Bank, later a branch of the Bank of Manhattan. We could not find much more information about Marshal Buhler, other than the fact that he served at least a couple of years, had a son named Carl, and possibly also owned a Construction Company in the Jamaica / Queens area, where he resided for over 30 years at the time of his appointment.

Newspaper article is from the Brooklyn, NY TIMES UNION, Tuesday, July 14th, 1936 (attached on image 8)
