Wonderful Pre-WWII USN USS Saratoga Photo Album, Good Conduct Medal, and Discharge of AVG Crew Chief John Overley (2nd Sq)
This is a wonderful pre-WWII time capsule photo album of one of the great Aircraft Carriers of WWII: the USS Saratoga CV-3, and the fact that it belonged to an eventual Flying Tiger makes it all the better! This pre-AVG grouping of Aviation Machinist's Mate First Class John L. Overley also includes his 1938 US Navy Good Conduct Medal, and his 1945 Discharge from the US Navy, where he served upon completion of his service with the Chinese Air Force's American Volunteer Group, more famously known as the Flying Tigers. Overley was a Ground Crew Chief for the AVG, serving in the 2nd Squadron, also known as the "Panda Bears", and after staying on an extra 2 weeks to help the USAAF 23rd Fighter Group get acclimated, went back to serving with the US Navy as an Aviation Mechanic for the duration of the war. This grouping of artifacts was received directly from Overley's niece.
The nice, pre-war USN Good Conduct medal has the early deep crimson ribbon, and is nicely engraved JOHN LOUIS OVERLEY 1938, so no mistake can be made that it was indeed issued to this eventual AVG member.
The album is in excellent condition, sporting hand painted and lettered details on its leather front. It was started in 1936 with a filled-out certificate for crossing the International Date Line on the Saratoga. There are over 140 photos in the album, some large, some very small, many with detailed information on the back. There are nice shots of aircraft, some with squadron markings, images of the carrier underway, and lots of personal photos of Overley and other crew members on board ship, and on leave. Overall, there are probably 30+ exceptional images.
The grouping is a wonderful small glimpse into the lead-up to WWII, from a member of one of the most famous aviation units of all time.
