ARTIFACT: This is an extremely rare and early Western Railroad baggage tag. The Western Railroad was established as a means to link the Boston & Worcester (B&W) Railroad in Massachusetts to the Hudson Berkshire Railroad in New York via crossing the Connecticut River. Different portions of the line opened between 1839 and 1841. The type of leather used, the shape of the tag (or fob), and the font of the numbering and lettering on the tag all point to a very early construction/usage (1840s-1850s). This tag is made from a very light colored brass or bronze, which has moderate to heavy patina from the passage of time. Strap is also heavily patinated, but still pliable thick chamois leather.

VINTAGE: Circa 1840s-1850s.

SIZE: Approximately 2-1/2" in width and 1-3/16" in height; strap about 9" in total length.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Brass or bronze.

ATTACHMENT: Strap, slit in strap.

MARKINGS: 4985*.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a railroad collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. ebay MAJX13 LFGEX8/13
