ARTIFACT:

From what we are told, and have observed, what we have here is an Extremely Rare FIRST RUN, Circa 1905, Series III San Diego 6 Point Star Police Badge, #12.

The Series III San Diego badge was worn for about 10 years, from 1905 to 1915. This is definitely an early example of the series, and probably should be called a Series 2.5 instead of Series III, as the badge uses the SAME FONT as the Series II badge, and is slightly smaller than the later examples of Series III that use a MUCH Larger Font.

Although not a very large badge, it is supposedly larger than the short-lived Series II SDPD badge, worn from 1900 to 1905, which it replaced because that series of badges was thought to be far too small. We have included a comparative image of a Series II badge next to a LATER Series III badge, showing the size increase between the two Series'. Our EARLY Series III (or Series 2.5) is DEFINITETLY smaller than the badge # 47, but reported to be larger than badge #9. But there are no published measurements anywhere that we can find, so we are just going by the images shown on the SDPD Museum Web Site.

This early, low numbered, Patrolman badge appears to match the size of the Detective and other Senior Rank badges of Series III, and is smaller than the later, higher-numbered, examples of Series III San Diego Patrolman Badges. Again, we do not have referential measurements here, but we have seen visual evidence of this badge next to a Series III Detective, and a later, large font, Series III Patrolman.

This is the only example of First Run Series III, or "Series 2.5", Patrolman, that we have seen or found reference of.

This San Diego Police Badge was purchased from a descendant of Charles L. Woods.

VINTAGE: Circa 1905.

SIZE: Approximately: 2-5/8" in height x 2-3/8" in width.

MATERIALS / CONSTRUCTION: Nicely stamped in heavy sheet nickel, and nickel-plated, with an old, period-of-use repair to the one-piece brass, saddled, pin.

ATTACHMENT: Vertical one-piece pin with saddle.

MARKINGS: None. Possibly made by CAL STAMP of San Diego, but unmarked, which is correct, as the San Diego Police Museum does not mention this badge being Maker Marked.

ITEM NOTES: This is from a California Police and Law Enforcement Badge Collection which we will be listing more of over the next few months. MAFDAM20 LCCGEX07/27/24

CONDITION: 7 (Fine - Very Fine). A fabulous example of an extremely rare badge, this badge has light to moderate duty wear on the obverse, and shows signs of the pin having been replaced during the period of use on the reverse. Almost all of the original paint appears to be present in the lettering & numbering.

GUARANTEE: As with all my artifacts, this piece is guaranteed to be original, as described.
