ARTIFACT:
This is an extremely rare and wonderful 1930s Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei (German Zeppelin Transport Company), or DZR, crew member flight suit patch. At the prompting of the Air Ministry, DZR was established in March 1935 to succeed a much earlier airship line known as DELAG (Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft), or the German Airship Transportation Corporation Ltd. Dr. Hugo Eckener, captain of the famed Graf Zeppelin during her around-the-world flight, became the outfit's chairman. As a commercial airline, Deutsche Zeppelin Reederei operated transatlantic Zeppelin flights through the 1930s, including aboard the ill-fated Hindenburg. The patch is marvelously embroidered in a chain stitch upon a blue cotton background and shows a small swastika beneath the eagle, globe and Zeppelin logo above. This comes to us right out of a veteran's scrap book.
