ARTIFACT:
NOTE: All of these USN patches being listed on
consignment with consignor code CON-DSS come from the lifelong collection of a
retired Vietnam War USN Pilot who had close times with the Tailhook Association
and was able to obtain some very special and unique patches. We are proud to
have been given the opportunity to bring parts of this collection to market. We
will be listing 25 or so now, and hope to have another offering in April or
May.
What we have here is an Extremely Rare WWII US Navy This patch was originally owned and worn by Lt. JG Rob Roy McGregor Converse. We can find no information relating Converse to the Squadron, but where he was with another squadron, presumably VT-28, aboard the USS Monterey CVL-26 in early 1944, it is assumed that he joined VF-21 later that year or in early 1945.
The Squadron was established as VGS-11 on 5 August 1942, reestablished as VC-11 on 1 March 1943, and then reestablished again as VF-21 on 16 May 1943. The unit saw heavy action flying F4U Corsairs in the Guadalcanal and Solomons campaigns early on, and later was carrier based on the USS Belleau Wood in 1944 and the USS Independence in 1945, flying F6F Hellcats, before it was disestablished at NAS Seattle on 5 November 1945.
