ARTIFACT:
What we have here is an extremely rare Original WWII 344th Fighter Squadron Silk Screen Printed 5" Leather Disney Designed Flight Jacket Patch.
This Iconic patch depicts an animated, cigar smoking, Disney Crow: Jim Crow of Dumbo fame, respite with Bowler cap and spats, Standing in a snowy field, snow covered, breath steaming, with a slingshot tucked behind him denoting his fighter / hunter status. The patch shows signs of having been sewn onto a flight jacket / flight clothing, but shows only light use and storage wear.
The 344th Fighter Squadron is an inactive United States Army Air Force unit from WWII. Its last assignment was with 343rd Fighter Group, 11th Army Air Force, stationed at Shemya Army Airfield, Alaska Territory.
The squadron was Constituted as the 344th Fighter Squadron on 2 Oct 1942, and Activated on 10 Oct 1942, as a P-40 Warhawk fighter squadron in Alaska during World War II. The squadron engaged in combat missions during the Aleutian Campaign, 1942 - 1943. The squadron switched to long-range P-38 Lightning fighters in 1944 and flew long-range attacks against Japanese shipping and airfields in northern Japan from its base at Shemya.
